What this means for people

More accounts means more gas bills left unpaid for more than 91 days, with no plan to repay.

Suppliers in Great Britain report domestic gas accounts on their own. A bill that has stayed unpaid for more than 91 days, with nothing agreed for paying it back, is included. Gas used after that point is excluded.

How to read this

Accounts, not households

Gas accounts are counted apart from electricity. One household can appear in both.

Unpaid for more than 91 days

The same 91-day definition applies to gas. Use after that point does not add to the arrears.

Great Britain

England, Scotland and Wales are included. Northern Ireland has its own energy market.

Accounts, not pounds

The figure counts gas accounts. Pounds owed can rise when the price cap rises, even if the number of accounts does not.

Not seasonally adjusted

One quarter can sit above another, because this count is not adjusted for the time of year.
